What is a DDoS Attack?

DDoS is a malicious attempt to overwhelm the resources available to an online network, application, or service with a flood of Internet traffic, preventing genuine users from gaining access.

DDoS represents a significant threat to business continuity. As organisations have grown more dependent on the Internet, web-based applications and services, availability has become a necessity.

DDoS is not only a threat to multiple business sectors such as retail, financial services and gaming companies, but also to other sectors requiring uptime and availability. DDoS attacks target mission critical business applications that your organisation relies on to manage daily operations, including email and CRM. All of these are targets for today’s sophisticated cyber attackers.

Why protect against DDoS?

Modern-day DDoS attacks are a dynamic combination of:

  1. Volumetric
  2. TCP State exhaustion (or Protocol)
  3. Application-layer attack vectors

While volumetric DDoS attacks are mainly focused on causing congestion, they can also be a sign of an ulterior motive, covering up more sophisticated and surgical DDoS attacks, such as penetration attempts on exposed services. In such cases, attackers may be attempting to cause as much operational disruption and distraction as possible.

Application-layer and state-exhaustion attacks need to be detected and mitigated on-premises close to where the applications or services reside.

How is DDoS protection different to existing security solutions?

IPS devices, firewalls and other security products are critical elements of a multi-layered defence strategy, but they are designed to solve security problems that are fundamentally different from dedicated DDoS detection and mitigation products.

Devices that offer IPS, for example, block intrusion attempts that could result in data theft. Meanwhile, a firewall acts as a policy enforcer to prevent unauthorised access to data.

While the above-mentioned security solutions effectively address network integrity and confidentiality, they fail to address the preservation of network availability, which is under threat from DDoS attacks. It must be noted that IPS devices and firewalls are stateful, inline solutions, which means they are vulnerable to DDoS attacks and often become the targets themselves.
